Food Safety Systems Implementation (Processor) Program

“A BC Step by Step HACCP Plan” Distance Learning Options

Some people are not able to attend “A BC Step by Step HACCP Plan” workshop in person because they live too far away from where workshops are held. This can be a problem because completion of this step is required in order to qualify for consultation and to access potential funding. To solve this problem, the SSFPA has developed distance learning options for people who can’t attend a workshop in person. These options do not require access to the internet, although it could be helpful. You can choose from our Conference Call Workshops or a personal Home Study Program to complete the “A Step by Step BC HACCP Plan” program. At the successful completion of these courses, you will receive a Record of Participation, the same as if you attended the workshop in person.

Conference Call Workshop

The conference call workshop consists of three weekly 1½ hours sessions, facilitated by our workshop instructor, Lisa Weih. No internet connection is required (although it can be used) – just a telephone. The facilitator will go over the course material, based on the same power point presentations given in the workshops. You can follow along by referring to the printed version of the power point mailed to you, or you can follow on screen by downloading a pdf version of the power point from our website. You will have opportunities to ask questions as you go along. Following completion of the conference calls, you will receive a Record of Participation.

Home Study Program

The second option is to review the material on your own and then successfully complete a quiz that demonstrates that you have read and understand the material. You will be sent the same material as the Conference Call Workshop. The only difference is that you will not be taking part in a conference call and you will need to write a quiz.  Following completion of the quiz, you will receive a Record of Participation.

How to Register

Cost of the program is $20, the same as attending in person.
There are several ways you can register:

  • Register on-line by visiting the Register for Events page (look for the Conference Call Workshop group).
  • Call the Outreach Coordinator toll free at 1-866-619-7372
  • Download and complete the workshop registration form, and fax it to 1-250-586-4188
  • Download and complete the workshop registration form, and mail it to: 2214 Sun Valley Dr, Nanaimo BC V9T 6E8

How do I pay for participating in the Conference Call Workshop or Home Study Program?

You can pay online similar to other workshops. You can also call in the Outreach Coordinator and provide her with your credit card information, or mail in a cheque.

What’s next?

After you have successfully registered for the course, you will be sent a username and password to access the appropriate web page, and mailed course material and detailed instructions. You will be mailed:

  • Instruction sheet
  • “A BC Step by Step HACCP Plan” workshop manual with resource CD
  • A DVD of the workshop, presented by Lisa Weih
  • A printed version of the workshop power point slide show
  • Each business represented in these workshops receives a FREE VWR® Traceable™ Waterproof Food Thermometer following completion of the course.
  • Following successful completion of a course, you will be mailed a Record of Participation.

What do we expect from you?

These options are designed to help you and your business. To get the most out of the programs, we recommend you review the DVD and workshop material before a conference call or taking a quiz. If you have any questions, call or email the Outreach Coordinator. Conference calls will move faster and you will be better prepared to ask questions, for example. In order to qualify for a Record of Participation, you must take part in all three conference calls (Conference Call Workshop) or successfully complete all three quizzes (Home Study Program).

What happens after I complete the workshop?

Once you have completed the course, you will be mailed a Record of Participation. You may also be eligible for free consultations and funding to help you develop a food safety processing plan for your business. To find if you are eligible for these options, please visit our website or contact the FSSI Program Manager.
